History of Dental Insurance
Dental insurance was invented in 1964. And, the maximum it covered then was the same as it covers today, 40 years later. $1000 dollars per year. If your policy had kept up with inflation it would cover over $9,000 of dental care per family member. Sadly, while the premiums rise, the benefits remain the same and exclusions are multiplying.
Your insurance company would like you to have a policy with a maximum of $9,000. And, so would every dentist in the world. But, dental insurance, like most employee benefits are being cut everywhere your employer can think of to cut them. Your employer is the one who has to pay the premium for you and he needs a “bargain. He is the only one who doesn’t want you to have the $9,000,000 simply because he probably could not afford to pay the premium for the policy. He has given you the bare minimum that will keep you happy, most likely a maximum of $1000/year. But, even so, the $1000 a year is enough to keep your teeth in good shape if you will make use of it.
If you have not seen a dentist in some time, dental insurance cannot hope to pay for years of neglect. To keep from having to settle for 18th century dentistry and if you have let your teeth deteriorate for years you will most likely need a source to supplement your dental insurance.
