The Different Types of Insurance Plans

1. HMO/DMO Managed care plans require you to select a primary dentist from a list, and cannot go

anywhere else. The plan may look good on paper, the premium is usually quite a bit less, but buyer beware. You may actually end up paying MORE at your HMO plan dentist. (See the link below.--Copy and paste this link into your browser window.) You may be surprised. . .

2. PPO plans allow you to select from a list as well, but unlike the HMO/DMO plans, you have the flexibility to be able to go outside the plan and still have the coverage.

3. Traditional plans or Indemnity plans  allow you to go anywhere you like and thus able to seek the best treatment possible. These plans are considered fee-for-service and come with limitations. There is an annual limit on coverage for dental spending and specific coverage limits may apply to individual dental procedures. There may be a waiting period for some procedures.

4. Direct Reimbursement plans offer a set amount of benefit money paid for any dental treatment whatsoever--much like a flexible spending account. These amounts are set by the employer and have nothing to do with an insurance company at all.  There are few exclusions with this plan though the maximum amount may be less.

Individual Policies:  Beware of these plans .  See my blog  post : Beware of Individual Dental Plans

Our philosophy is that insurance coverage does not, nor should it dictate optimal dental treatment.
